Families and Friends

There are large and small families, noisy and quiet ones, united by blood ties, friendship, or neighborhood. In this Museum, ALL families are welcome!

The Museum is a space for activating memories with the potential for sharing between generations. Within families and among friends, learning, relationships, and cultural habits are solidified while strolling and conversing.

Many of the audiences who visit us do so in this context and, in that sense, the Museum currently has three offerings for families and friends.

A monthly program, held on weekends and open to all ages. The whole family participates, from the youngest members to grandparents, cousins, and friends. Electric Families It happens once a month, on Saturday mornings. The aim is for this program to coincide with some of the dates and times that mark the lives of families: Father's Day, Mother's Day, Grandparents' Day, Carnival, Halloween, among other dates.

Monthly program, between May and September.

Visits with electric car rides, which take place at dusk, allow families and friends to experience the magic of the Museum and the electric car at night.

A highlight for all families is celebrating each other's birthdays, especially the children's. Birthday celebrations at the Museum are already a tradition. The program There's a Party at the Museum It includes 4 different modalities and is intended for children aged 6 to 12.

  • Party at the Museum
  • Party and Snack at the Museum
  • Party at the Museum + electric car ride
  • Party and snacks at the museum + electric car ride

Community

The Tram Car Museum is located in the heart of the Massarelos Valley, a rich and diverse territory with social housing, middle and upper-class housing; universities and schools; a profoundly rural area and, simultaneously, strong industrial influences. This territory is shared by community groups and research groups, other cultural, social and recreational institutions. It is within this context of immense territorial richness that the Museum faces the challenge of working with and for the community, at the level of collecting stories and creating a network and community of neighbors. Working with and for people is a way of being that is realized in concrete projects.

OBSERVATORY is a community-based and participatory project that began development in late 2024 with the surrounding community of the Electric Car Museum, to create an Observatory to monitor the birth and growth of the new bridge over the Douro River. The aim is to involve the community in various actions of observation, recording, debate, reflection, and questioning surrounding the Ferreirinha Bridge.

The project is promoted by the Electric Car Museum, the Massarelos Residents Association, and the Student Technical Support Office (GATE), part of the Center for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism at FAUP.

In order to be able to act in diverse areas, the project is developed around three main axes:

  • Get to know: To develop actions aimed at listening, discovering, and recording.
  • debate: To develop actions aimed at sharing, collaborating, and imagining.
  • Dos: To develop actions aimed at demonstrating, proposing, and acting.

Monthly field trips, on the first Tuesday of each month at 15 pm, to monitor the progress of the work, get to know the area, and collect records in the field: interviews, graphic material, video, among others.

A dedicated space at the entrance of the Electric Car Museum, organized into different sections, is being updated with material collected through various activities. Simultaneously, it is open to anyone who wishes to contribute.

Since the project aims to be of and for the community, various actions are being promoted to encourage everyone involved to engage with the themes being addressed.

Currently, the best way to communicate is through social media. Therefore, the page was created... instagram from the Observatory where all the actions carried out are shared, as well as creating a Digital Newspaper.

ENTRELINHAS is a gathering for all generations, organized by the Electric Car Museum and the Massarelos Residents Association. On this day, the lines of memory, trams, generations, and also of... intersect. crochetThe Annual Crochet Meeting takes place in the context of this day when the Museum opens its doors to the entire community and promotes sharing among its neighbors.

For several years, the Tram Car Museum has been associated with the city's Christmas festivities with a decorated tram circulating in public service. Currently, the Museum seeks to involve the community and the partners with whom it works throughout the year in this event. In the 2023 edition, the Christmas tram was painted by the school community of EB1 JI do Bom Sucesso. In 2024, the tram was painted with the help of users of the Porto Hostels, following the work developed throughout the year with this institution.

The Electric Tram Parade is an annual event that brings together the entire Electric Tram Museum team. It takes place on the first Saturday of May and is the grand celebration of the tram. Many of the trams from the collection take to the streets, and the museum offers a rich program of activities both inside and outside.

Currently, the museum has sought to strengthen its connection with the community on this day, inviting individuals, groups, and partners from the neighboring community or those with whom it works regularly to participate in the parade. It is a moment to bring to the community what also belongs to it.

Inclusion

COMMUNITY – WITHOUT DOORS

"Without Doors" is one of the programmatic pillars of the Education, Mediation and Reception Service of the MCE (Museum of Education and Culture). We dream of becoming a museum without doors, so that everyone can enter.

This section encompasses all actions and programs designed to ensure the Museum can effectively welcome all audiences. In terms of physical accessibility, the Museum is not yet fully accessible. However, there is a strong desire to reach all audiences. The creation of a specific section dedicated to this area and free access to the museum for people with special needs are proof of this commitment to the dream of a museum without doors.

"SEGANDAS d'Elétrico" is a monthly program that began in 2024, aimed at all those who, for whatever reason, have special needs and are often deprived of access to cultural institutions.

Through ongoing programming, we seek to make the Museum accessible and welcoming to all, considering different types of needs such as: mental illness, reduced mobility, blind and visually impaired individuals, deaf people, and people excluded from society, such as the homeless or sick people.

In developing the "SECONDS BY TELEPHONE" program, the Museum offers a specific schedule, but also seeks to better understand the needs and interests of each particular group. This project includes visits to the museum by various groups with special needs, as well as visits to institutions and sharing sessions. In recent months, continued work with the... Somos Nós Association – Trisomy 21With the CACI das Antas – Center for Activities and Training for Inclusion, with the AEDES – Association for Education and Social Development and the Magalhães Lemos – Medical-Legal Clinic Unit

This program concludes the annual cycle of "SEGUNDAS d'Elétrico" and prepares for the next one. It's a sharing of best practices, challenges, aspirations, and ways of working, open to cultural and social agents in the city. Around the table, we share what a past year has been like. Electric Mondays And from this sharing, new ideas emerge for a new year.

In 2024, the Museum began offering audio guides in different languages, including Portuguese Sign Language, audio guides in simple language, and audio descriptions, with the aim of becoming increasingly accessible to everyone.

Mission and Educational Policy

Mission and Educational Policy of the Museum

The Electric Car Museum Team's educational mission is to develop and implement a program open to all audiences that, based on its collections, reactivates memories, tells stories, stimulates creativity, and fosters critical and reflective thinking about the past, present, and future of mobility and sustainability in the city of Porto and the world.

We believe that the museum has a relevant educational role in raising awareness and engaging audiences on such important topics as sustainability, mobility, responsibility for the future of the planet, and the appreciation of heritage and memories.

We assume that the starting point for education at the Electric Car Museum is the people, the collections, and the space between them.

The educational mission of MCE is embraced by the entire team and extends beyond the work carried out by the educational service: it is present in the way it is presented, in the care taken in creating accessible texts, and in the concern to welcome all audiences.

The development of an educational project, through a concrete annual program, is the responsibility of the education, mediation, and support team.

The Tram Car Museum is, in its origins, a museum with educational concerns. Its educational policy:

  • provides the context for the practice of every day. It frames what is done, how it is done, and why it is done. And in this way, it creates the context for making decisions.
  • guides, helps to reflect and plan as a team, creates a focus.; potential for the museum to have a program more focused on education;
  • guides the team in their work, encouraging them to follow a certain path;
  • sets priorities clear, which leads to saving time;
  • contributes to turning the museum around More and more outward, toward the city and the world, and always toward the people..
